  1. I recommend The People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. It is based on a true story of the Sarajevo haggadah (the Jewish book for Passover) which was recovered after the Bosnian war. Chapters alternate between tracing the history of the book back through the centuries and the book conservator's current life.

  2. I recommend The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind:Creating Currents and Electricity of Hope by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. It's an inspiring story about William Kamkwamba. Growing up amid famine and poverty in rural Malawi, wind was one of the few abundant resources available, and the inventive fourteen-year-old saw its energy as a way to power his dreams. "With a windmill, we'd finally release ourselves from the troubles of darkness and hunger," he realized. "A windmill meant more than just power, it was freedom." Despite the biting jeers of village skeptics, young William devoted himself to borrowed textbooks and salvage yards in pursuit of a device that could produce an "electric wind."

  3. I recommend The Book Thief, a narrative about germany during WWII. Kind of long, sad which would be expected. It is in the young adult section, but I don't know if my young adult would like it. Recommended by someone that loved it and I loved it, others just liked it.

  4. (Info about the Bundles of Books Used Bookstore in Glen Ellyn - From Liz)

    Dear Fellow book lovers,

I have discovered the best place to get used books and to guarantee that they have the books we are reading available to us, Bundles of Books. It is located on Crescent Street immediately across from the station building in Glen Ellyn. Sam and I road our bikes over there on Saturday and spent almost 2 hours in the shop. It is all used books and unlike other used book stores, they know what they have and where it is located in the store. The owner, Rosemary, is a lovely woman who caters to book clubs and will help find all the gently used books on your list, as long as they aren't hardcover. The cost is 50% of the regular price of the book, even if she has to find it for you. You can also accrue store credit by bringing in your gently used paperbacks. I managed to pick up Shadowind and Space Between Us. This store is so much better than Fugal Muse in Darien because it is, 1) in Glen Ellyn and 2) they know their inventory and can get what you need. She also pays attention to the reading lists at the schools and stocks those paperbacks as well.

Any books that you bring to them that they can't use are given the option of returning to you or they will donate them to the local Vet hospital or send them overseas to our troops.

I am just a little excited about this store because I hate paying full price for books and I love going into bookstores and chatting with knowledgeable book people. Amazon is okay, but this just adds that bit of fun to the whole reading experience. It also reminds me of my favorite bookstore located in NYC.

She is currently helping a men's group locate copies of The Shack. If you have one and are willing to part with it, she'll give you store credit for it.

The shop is open 7 days a week. They will be participating in the book fair that is happening in Glen Ellyn on June 19th. If you are looking for any of the last few books on our list, you can call at 630-545-0069 to see if they have them for you.

    Enjoy,
    Liz
